WeAreTheCity - Proud to introduce our Rising Star Judges for 2017

Judging the Rising star awards is no easy task. Several of the judges from last years awards stated it was one of the hardest judging activities they have ever undertaken due to the amazing achievements of the women who were nominated. We expect this year will be no different!

For our 2017 Rising Star awards, we are leveraging the extensive experience and industry knowledge of 28 amazing judges. Each judge has been carefully selected for their expertise in a particular field or their breadth of knowledge across the business landscape.

We are also proud to welcome back five of our 2016 judges, Simone Roche, Northern Power Women, Mairi McHaffie, Scene Change & Coaching Squared, Paul Sesay, The National Diversity Awards, Maggie Berry, WE Connect International and Miranda Brawn, Daiwa Capital Markets & the Black Cultural Archives.

We are also honoured to introduce 23 new judges for this years awards from The Times, the Government Equalities Office, BBC, Women's Equality Party, House of Lords, African Caribbean Business Network, Sodexo, RBS, Chartered Insurance Institute, PwC, Smart Works, HSBC, Aviva Investors, The FISER Group, Purple Space, Cancer Research UK, Centre for Synchronous Leadership and Roche UK.

On behalf of WeAreTheCity, our sponsors and future nominees we would like to sincerely thank all of our judges for their dedication to female pipeline and for donating their valuable time to judge the Rising Star awards in 2017.

Our Rising Star awards are the only awards of their kind to focus solely on the pipeline of female talent below a management level. The aim of the 2017 awards is to recognise and celebrate 100 female role models and individual contributors across 20 different industries who represent the future leaders of tomorrow.

Announcing WeAreTheCity’s Top 100 Rising Star Awards 2017

In 2015, WeAreTheCity launched its Rising Star awards and set a strategic objective to promote the achievements of 500 women from a multitude of industries in the UK and India by 2018.

The Rising Star awards recognise the achievements of women who are below Senior Management or Director level and therefore represent the female talent pipeline and the next generation of future leaders.

We are proud to announce that nominations for our 2017 Rising Star awards open on 01 February.

In previous years, the awards have been supported by an array of FTSE sponsors and this year is no different. We are proud to announce that this year’s award headline sponsors are The Times and The Sunday Times.

The Times & Sunday Times logo

“We are delighted to support WeAreTheCity as the headline sponsor for their Rising Star Awards in 2017. Building and supporting a strong pipeline of female talent is a key area of focus at The Times and The Sunday Times. We are excited to be a part of this unique awards programme that shines the spotlight on the achievements of women across so many different industries. We are honoured to be involved and look forward to working alongside so many other organisations who are as passionate about gender equality as we are”

– Chris Duncan, Managing Director, Times Newspapers Ltd

The Rising Star awards are also supported by Aon, Barclays, Bloomberg, Citi, CRUK, EY, Keir, Lloyd’s, Morgan Stanley, Northern Trust, Oliver Wyman, Societe Generale, Streets Consulting, Worldpay and 3M. Additional sponsors and categories will be announced throughout January.

Through WeAreTheCity’s Rising Star awards, and with the support of all our sponsors, WeAreTheCity will add to their alumni of 200 award winners by recognising the achievements of an additional 150 women and an additional 10 champions in the UK and India during 2017.

By highlighting the accolades of inspirational female talent, WeAreTheCity hopes to encourage organisations and business leaders to invest in and recognise women as leaders of tomorrow and individual contributors within their respective industries.

Vanessa Vallely, Founder and CEO of WeAreTheCity, said: “I am very excited to launch our 2017 Rising Star awards and to be once again working with a variety of companies who are actively supporting the gender agenda. With their help over the past three years, we have shone a spotlight on 200 amazing women. I am very proud that this number will rise to 350 in 2017 and am looking forward to welcoming the next cohort of winners to WeAreTheCity’s Rising Star family.”

Recognising that careers for women may follow different timescales, the Rising Star awards do not have any age restrictions included within the criteria. WeAreTheCity feels it has a responsibility to ensure that female talent, regardless of age and background, receives the necessary support and skills to transition into leadership positions and key decision-making roles within our organisations.

Alongside our Rising Star categories and Rising Star Champion award, we are also pleased to announce a new award for 2017 – Company of the Year. Uma Nair | Self Employed

Writing for nearly three decades on contemporary Indian art can chisel one’s thoughts and provide an arsenal that brims on the volume and power of memory. Having penned reviews and observations for major newspapers like Economic Times ,Hindustan Times and Asian Age Uma Nair believes no writing can happen without research.Nair’s obituary of Sayed Haider Raza was carried in Indian Express,The Hindu and the Asian Age.

Nair’s monograph on Arpita Singh’s Wishdream was an essay that was penned as far back as 2005 but published by Saffronart in 2010.Nair’s admiration for Sanjay Bhattacharyya’s works   goes back to two decades when she would visit all his solo showings.

In an art world obsessed with installations and art writing in media reduced to barefoot journalism Nair feels art needs to be studied with a certain cerebral absorption .A lot art in India has been reduced to wanton colour strokes with no depth and nearly absent experience. Nair’s notes on Sanjay span nearly two decades and she was able to pick and preen into his past through the prism of the present. In 2012 she curated Sanjay Bhattacharyya’s epic showing of Krishna at Religare in Delhi.

Nair believes that curating too is an exercise that must go beyond the books and walls. It must invite bouquets and brickbats,it must probe the darker secrets of an artist’s sensibility.Nair’s most important curatorial venture has been with the Lalit Kala Akademi in a show called Moderns that has been sent to Jordan, Berlin and Vienna. Her desire is to write and educate and inform.(Uma Nair Blog TOI) (Uma Nair Huffington Post) (Uma Nair Economic Times) (Uma Nair The Hindu)
