WeAreTheCity India Rising Star awards - Proud to introduce our Award Judges

Judging the Rising Star awards is no easy task. Several of the judges from this year’s awards in the UK awards stated it was one of the hardest judging activities they have ever undertaken due to the incredible achievements of the women who were nominated. We expect our awards in India will be no different!

For our 2016 Rising Star awards, we are leveraging the extensive experience and industry knowledge of 15 esteemed judges. Each judge has been carefully selected for their expertise in a particular field or their breadth of knowledge across the business landscape.

On behalf of WeAreTheCity, our sponsors and future nominees, we would like to sincerely thank all of our judges for their dedication to the female pipeline and for donating their valuable time to judge the Rising Star awards in India for 2016.

Our Rising Star awards are the only awards of their kind to focus solely on the pipeline of female talent below management level. The aim of the 2016 awards is to recognise and celebrate 50 female role models and individual contributors across many different industries who represent the future leaders of tomorrow.

WeAreTheCity presented the winners of the Top 100 Rising Star awards with their trophies last night, in a ceremony at Barclays, London.

Over 200 winners, sponsors, judges and guests attended and enjoyed a champagne reception. The audience were welcomed by Vanessa Vallely, WeAreTheCity Managing Director; Sally Clark, Chief Internal Auditor, Barclays; and Caroline Dinenage, MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Women, and Family Justice Equalities.

After congratulating the Top 100 winners, Sally Clark spoke of the importance of networking and urged the audience to connect with each other. She said, “Networking was the last thing I wanted to do, but I realise now that was a failure on my part”

“So make sure you can find a new friend and I wish you all a fabulous evening.”

Following on, Caroline Dinenage, MP said, “It is lovely to be here this evening. It feels like yesterday I was speaking at last year’s awards.”

“I am really pleased to be speaking today because these awards are promoting role models, and that is exactly what we need to do.”

“We all need allies. Madeleine Albright once said, ‘there is a special place in hell for women who do not help other women’, and I’m a firm believer in that.”

“You are all winners, all stars and all role models to those who come after you.”

Broadcaster and journalist, Brenda Emmanus, hosted the awards ceremony, sponsored by Barclays. Congratulating the winners, Emmanus said, “You are all diamonds in the rough that are about to shake up the establishment.”

“Where you are right now is exactly where you are supposed to be. You are about to make serious strides.”

“I commend you for where you are so far, and I commend those behind you who have got you this far.”

“This is an army and we march forward together.”

During the interval, the audience were treated to surprise entertainment from the North London Military Wives Choir. The choir delivered a moving performance and received a standing ovation from the audience.

Military Wives Choirs

Closing the awards, Emmanus left the crowd with inspiring words, saying, “When God created women, he was simply showing off.”

“We don’t get bitter, we get better.”

The Rising Star awards were introduced to showcase the UK pipeline of female talent below management level and to create 100 female role models across 20 different industries and professions as well as celebrating the hard work and support of our Rising Star Champions.

WATC Top 100 Rising Star Awards | Barclays to host winners’ celebrations

We are proud to announce that Barclays will be hosting the celebration event for winners of WeAreTheCity’s Top 100 Rising Stars awards.

The celebratory event will be held on 30 June 2016 at Barclays, 1 Churchill Square Place, Canary Wharf and will be attended by our 100 winners, judges and sponsors.

During the celebrations, our guests will have the opportunity to network and hear from a number of inspirational speakers, such as Brenda Emmanus, BBC Arts and Culture presenter, and Caroline Dinenage, MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Women, Equalities and Family Justice. Guests will be welcomed to Barclays by Sally Clark, Chief Internal Auditor.

Mark McLane - Barclays HeforsheMark McLane, Global Head of Diversity and Inclusion, Barclays said: “I am delighted that Barclays have sponsored WeAreTheCity Top 100 Rising Star Awards and are hosting the finalist event.”

“Women have long played a key role in the success of Barclays, from our female telephonists in the early 1900s to Hilda Harding, whose appointment as the UK’s first female Bank Manager in 1958 showed Barclays recognised talent rather than gender. Right up today where our workforce is 51% female and as a United Nations HeForShe Impact Champion, we have achieved gender parity. In conjunction with WeAreTheCity we are able to shine the spotlight fully on the many great women who are leading and contributing to all sectors of business and society not only in the UK but also across the globe. The finalist event is only the start for those recognised as Rising Stars. These women will truly help shape the future – not only their own careers and the lives of those around them. I encourage each Rising Star to “pay it forward” and support those following in their footsteps.”

Jacqueline-Gold-thumbJacqueline Gold CBE, Chief Executive of Gold Group International, Ann Summers and Knickerbox and supporter of the Rising Star Awards, said: “Congratulations ladies! You should be incredibly proud of this amazing achievement and the recognition it gives to the hard work and dedication you have put into your business. I wish you every success for the future and I am certain that with the passion, energy and enthusiasm you have already shown you will continue to achieve many great things!”

Inga BealeInga Beale, CEO, Lloyd’s said: “Many congratulations to everyone who has been nominated as a Rising Star. Lloyd¹s is delighted to offer its continuing support to WeAreTheCity and in particular the winners of the Rising Stars Insurance category who are such important role models for our industry.”

The Rising Star Awards were introduced to showcase the pipeline of female talent in the UK and to create role models across 20 different industries and professions. The awards focus on celebrating the achievements of women below a management level regardless of age.
