Helen Owen

Thanks to some inspirational teachers, I always preferred STEM subjects throughout school, particularly maths.

I went on to study maths at university, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do, but I wanted to continue in STEM. I started my career at National Grid in 2017 on the graduate programme. During the programme I got involved in outreach programmes. Following this I worked in construction contract management for 3 years, I worked my way up to Contract Manager of a large portfolio of overhead lines, underground cable and substation uprating projects enabling the connection of the new nuclear power station, Hinkley Point C. Throughout my time in contracts, I started getting involved in our Enabling employee resource group (ERG), supporting colleagues with disabilities, neurodiversity and health conditions. My passion for this work grew and eventually, I became co-lead of the ERG. I soon realised that despite my love for working in STEM, my calling was in diversity, equity and inclusion. I got more involved with DEI voluntarily until I was able to apply for a secondment in the DEI team at National Grid. I have now been promoted to a permanent position in our UK DEI team supporting our UK business and also working on and leading many Global DEI initiatives. I am blessed to be able to support our colleagues, present and future, to feel like they belong in the energy industry no matter who they are.
