Maria Ahmad

Making a difference and striving to be better every day.

These are the principles by which I aim to live my life; whether teaching medical students, empowering patients, or galvanising healthcare colleagues.

My name is Maria and I am an NHS Foundation Year 1 (FY1) junior doctor. I completed my medical degree with distinction, and my intercalated degree in Pre-Hospital Medicine, at Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry, graduating in 2022. I am passionate about medical education and medical leadership, and strive to share my knowledge, empower and inspire others.

I have taught children, school students, medical students, healthcare professionals, the public, and corporate clients, topics ranging from medical school applications to basic life support to public health messages. I have led a number of these sessions and teams, often on a voluntary basis, to achieve these goals. I am honoured that my contribution to medical education was recognised by the international Zeshan Qureshi Award for Outstanding Achievement in Medical Education.

I believe that anyone, no matter their position in an organisation, can be a leader. I am currently co-authoring a book with authors internationally, focusing on leadership concepts and their practical application in healthcare for medical students and junior doctors. We hope that our book and associated teaching sessions for students across the globe will help to change medical school curricula, which currently have little, if any, focus on leadership, despite it being a crucial part of our roles as medical students and junior doctors.
