Since 2021, Rosemary Mwitwa Kafula has been honing her leadership, commitment, and initiative through various roles both within university and beyond.

She is an ambitious and conscientious 4th year medical student passionate about addressing healthcare disparities, medical education and widening participation. Rosemary is committed to empowering others and contributing to the community.

One of Rosemary’s first commitments to mentorship was ignited through her role as Melanin Medics Mentor, where she has provided monthly one-to-one mentoring sessions to aspiring medical students from African Caribbean backgrounds. As well as offering opportunity for self-assessment, Rosemary uses her role as Mentor to champion those from ethnic minority backgrounds. She vowed to give back and instil confidence and resilience amongst those from a similar background to hers.

Outside of medical school, Rosemary seeks to enhance her clinical skills through sub-internship and clinical observership roles. She also engages with prospective students as a Medical School Ambassador and encourages them to aim higher, helping them to overcome their perceived barriers to higher education.

Rosemary Mwitwa Kafula has also contributed significantly to academic support initiatives, such as tutoring for the Leicester Medical School Revision Society and coordinating revision events for first-year medical students as Year 2 Coordinator of Leicester Insight. In her leadership roles, including Vice President of Pathology Society and President of Leicester University Medics African Caribbean Society (LUMACS), she has facilitated educational and networking opportunities for students, while also spearheading initiatives to celebrate diversity and empower underrepresented groups in medicine.
