Rising Stars in Insurance 2016

Introducing our Rising Stars winners in the Insurance category for 2016

Adobea Atsrefi

AIG

I joined AIG in 2014, wanting to make a positive impact, in any way. I am still blown away by the things I have achieved and the progress I have made since then. It motivates me to continue striving.

I work in the Multinational department dealing with wide ranging commercial insurance products and complex international regulations. I also lead the external networking of the African-Caribbean Employee Resource Group. Here I am involved in a number of initiatives, from teaching GCSE students “soft skills”, showing University students the different avenues available within insurance, to facilitating discussions with industry leaders regarding the business benefits of having a diverse workforce.

None of this would be possible without the encouragement and support of women within this company. I have been blessed to have a number of figures championing and helping me throughout this journey, and I aim to do the same for others.

Mary O'Connor

Facilities is an ever changing and developing industry that I love being part of and seeing the possibilities it presents. My Mother taught me, that hard work speaks for itself, passion is addictive and independence is a good quality to have.

I have reached where I am today by being honest, having pride in my work and saying yes to doing things initially outside my skill set. Some of the most interesting projects I have worked on have been things I didn’t know how to do before. Being part of the BIFM Rising FM Sig being a perfect example.

I continually strive to learn and understand more about the industry and try to instil that knowledge and curiosity in my team. Further to this I am extremely passionate about gender parity and helping inspire girls to get into FM and savouring all the exciting challenges it has to offer.

Samantha Jones

Smart Works

As the manager of the new Smart Works centre in West London, it is my job, and my privilege, to bring our amazing Smart Works service to more women who need our help to succeed at interview and get their lives back on track.  Over the last year, I am proud to say that I have increased the number of appointments we’ve delivered by 41%, from 545 to 770, recruited and managed over 30 volunteers to deliver our service, who have together clocked up over 2000 hours of service.  Most importantly, over one in two, 59%, of the women who came to see us in West London went on to succeed at their job interview.

A visit to Smart Works takes just two hours, and during that time each woman receives a high-quality outfit, theirs to keep, and one to one coaching tailored to that upcoming interview.  Many of the women that walk through our doors have been unemployed for years.  We see single mothers with no support, women with physical and mental disabilities and ex-prisoners.  They frequently arrive nervous and feel daunted by the prospect of interview however they always leave confident, charged and lifted by the support they receive.  At Smart Works we believe every woman has many wonderful talents they can offer the world, what they lack is confidence.  My role is to assist them in unlocking their confidence so that they can showcase their skills and shine in their interview.

I have made it my mission to reach out to as many women as possible and welcome them through the Smart Works doors.  This meant rapidly building relationships with people who could refer, the Job Centres, Work Programme providers and other charities working to support women back into employment.  It has also meant building a skilled and reliable network of volunteers who could deliver an impeccable service to the women we see.  It also meant building a support network in the local community and spreading the word.

It has been a fantastic year for me and for Smart Works in West London and I am looking forward to building on this in the year ahead.

Mary Dobson

LYCP

Mary founded London Young Charity Professionals (LYCP) in 2014, noting a lack of support for London-based young professionals working in the charity sector. Alongside a day job managing NSPCC Special Events, she launched the network with regular, free-to-attend networking drinks, creating an informal, friendly space for members to be able to share ideas, challenges and to support each other.

The network gained 1,500 LinkedIn members within the first six months and a stellar committee of two. Last year Mary organised ‘LYCP Inspirationals’, featuring seven sector-leading charity CEOs, including Barbara Frost, Ciaran Devane and Mark Goldring, each talking about their five greatest failures.

Sold out, and supported by The Guardian, Blackbaud & Harris Hill, the series provided an unrivalled opportunity for young professionals to be inspired and motivated by leading lights. Recently named one of Eventbrite’s top 100 movers & shakers in the Events Industry, she’s “frequently touted as one to watch!”

Rising Stars in Education & Academia 2016

Introducing our Rising Stars winners in the Education and Academia category for 2016

Carrie Dunn

University of East London

I run the BA (Hons) Sports Journalism at the University of East London, and have worked in the past 12 months to improve the gender balance for our intake. In September 2015 we welcomed our new first years – 20 per cent are female (compared to 10 per cent the year before and none at all the year before that). I have loved my ten years so far as a sports journalist and very much want to encourage young women to consider it as a potential career.

I am also a freelance sports journalist who in 2015 covered the Women’s World Cup for the Times and for Eurosport.com. During the tournament I guested on broadcast outlets including CNN, BBC Radio Five Live, LBC and BBC Radio London.

Brenda Neburagho

St Mathew Academy

The world around us is always changing and my experience is that education is the key to sharing opportunities and overcoming life’s challenges. This is why I joined the teaching profession at 21, straight after university.  I began teaching in Further Education, which meant that I was usually the youngest person in the classroom. 16 years later, my enthusiasm has matured into a responsibility as a leader to inspire and empower others through education.

My role is extremely varied. Whether that is in the classroom, teaching young people or training senior leaders at the Institute of Education. As well as being a full-time Deputy Head teacher, I am also a Leadership and Management coach. Continual learning for myself is very important. In 2005, I received a Masters in Health Education and Health promotion and am learning Web design and amateur astronomy.

Faye Kilgour is a CTI trained coach who specialises in coaching aimed at improving communication and relationships in education and business. Over the last six years I have been working with Ignite!, working to increase young people’s and their families engagement and access to S.T.E.M education. Leading on developing 3-2-1-Ignition* one of UK’s the first Science Pop Up Shops. Following which I developed Community Curiosity Labs – spaces where young people science learning is driven by questions in some of the hardest to reach areas of Nottingham.

Alongside my work with Ignite! I have worked on a range of other initiatives including running workshops in Dubai and Beirut with charity Spark and Mettle and the British Counci to help build soft skills in over 300 young people.

I am a trustee at young people’s creative learning agency T.M.C and on the advisory board of Dragon Breath Theatre.

Amy Farrelly

Rugby School

For the past eleven years I have been working and teaching Fine Art Photography in the UK. Originally from Dallas, Texas, I came to the UK to start a new life in education and art and design. In the States, I have previously taught History, Journalism, and Photojournalism as well as working in the publishing industry for Harper Collins and Macmillan. Teaching and running a boarding house of fifty- one girls in one of the finest academic institutions in England has provided me the insight needed to deliver outstanding pastoral care as well as inspirational teaching. I believe a young person’s successful academic and creative arts achievements require a solid foundation of nurtured support and care. My personal educational philosophy is to never stop learning and it is my intention to empower young people to use the visual and creative arts as a tool for lifelong learning and personal expression.

Elisha St Hilaire

Aon UK Limited

I am a highly experienced Executive Assistant and have worked in a variety of different industries before joining the insurance sector.

I also Chair Aon’s Women’s International Network “WIN” which is a Business Resource Group for colleagues. Since forming the WIN Committee, we have seen the group grow organically from 60 members to 350 across the UK. It has been a very exciting journey and look forward to what the future holds in this space both internally and across the market.

Last year I was able to further empower our female colleagues at Aon to realise their true potential by implementing a signature event in celebration of International Women’s Day. An idea that was born in the small confines of the WIN Committee and in which I played an integral part.

The WIN – Empower your Career conference welcomed 90 colleagues from all over the UK to Old Trafford, where our CEO and business leaders shared their career journeys and answered guests’ questions on the day. The conference was a great success and has helped our Talent & Development team implement specific training to help develop our female talent pipeline at Aon.  This was WIN’s biggest event to date.

Rising Stars - EA & PA 2016

Introducing our Rising Stars winners in the EA and PA category for 2016

jennifer corcoran Rising Stars PA and EA 2016Jennifer Corcoran

Credit Agricole CIB

Welcome to my bio.  Tooting your own horn can feel a bit awkward but when it comes to championing the PA/EA profession or being an advocate for fairness and equality I’m more than happy to wax lyrical.

For me the pen is mightier than the sword and in 2014 I set up my own PA related blog.  I have also guest blogged on subjects such as networking, speaking up, creating an internal PA forum, the importance of a professional headshot and getting an up to date job description.  I have pushed through my comfort zone and spoken at conferences as to how social media can empower Assistants.

On the voluntary side I am the National PRO for EUMA UK which is a not-for-profit Association for Management Assistants across 25 countries.  I am also a proud founding member of WEP and belong to the SPRING women’s network at CACIB.

Simone White

BlackRock

I am the Founder and Chair of the ACE Network (Assistant Community EMEA) at BlackRock, the world’s leading Asset Management Firm.  Having worked in administration for over 20 years, I have a wealth of experience in supporting executives at every level as well as managing teams and offices. As Chair of ACE, I work with managers, HR and assistants to ‘raise the bar’ and elevate the role of the admin professional.  The ACE Network provides specific training for assistants and managers as well as assistant on-boarding, business knowledge sessions and networking.  Under the ACE Connects banner, ACE host network sessions encouraging internal & external assistants that speak every day to meet face to face and make those important connections and support their businesses and themselves. I actively connect with assistants via 1-1 mentoring or networking across industries and time zones to encourage them to take the lead and make change.

Alongside this, my day job is Executive Support to the Heads of iShares EMEA Product, Global Sustainability, and EMEA Range Management.  I am also the Assistant Co-ordinator for iShares London.

I am a Fellow of EPPA and a member of EUMA and the London PA Network.

Karen Glenn

Colt Technology Services

I am an award winning PA with over eight years’ experience, extremely passionate and ambitious, who champions the role as a truly fantastic career choice. It is a career that I enjoy and have turned it into an opportunity to be among the best in my field.  An efficient and career-focused PA who believes passionately about providing the highest level of support to the Executive which assists in underpinning their strategic objectives and someone who consistently works to the highest professional standards with superb communication skills and the ability to build solid relationships. I have been described by my Executive Team as the rock, the go to person in the team, always in tune with the feelings of others and knowing when to offer extra support or advice. A PA who enjoys networking with peers with the aim of sharing knowledge and supporting others starting on their career journey along with becoming a fellow member of EPAA this year.

I  have also recently started public speaking, with the first attempt being at a PA training day, it is important to always challenge yourself and look for areas of development to grow. More recently I am proud to be the co-founder of a new network for Essex office support staff called “NESS”.  It is aimed not only at PA/EAs but office administrators, office managers, receptions, office juniors to bring the support staff together to connect, share & develop.  NESS had its launch event on the evening of 10th May 2016.

Hannah Kate Smith

RSA

I’m Hannah, Executive Assistant to the MD of our Commercial business at RSA Group. My role is really varied; one day I’m writing a speech; the next I’m facilitating a Board meeting! I joined the RSA graduate programme in 2011, fresh-faced from Leeds University with a History of Art MA in hand. Since then, I’ve worked in underwriting, business development, leadership and marketing positions in the UK and mainland Europe.

One of my proudest moments was being elected first female Chair of the Young Members’ Committee at the Insurance Institute of London. We organise development and networking events for young professionals across the market. Other highlights include shaping a Mentoring scheme for ACII exam candidates and participating at Dive In Festival; promoting diversity in insurance.

Outside work, I’m an avid charity runner and perform in musicals with a London-based Am-Dram society.

What motivates me? Challenging the norm; making a difference.
