Joy Adams | Deutsche Bank

Joy works across the Compliance and Legal divisions of DB and focuses on issues related to culture, communication, and conduct. Prior to this, she worked in the Government and Regulatory Affairs Department as well as the Group Finance Communications and Engagement team, where she was responsible for the global launch of a Group Finance culture change project. This began the strategic communications campaign for the Group Financial culture initiative.

She is a graduate of the Harvard Kennedy School of Government (HKS) where she focused on political and economic development. During this time she was also the recipient of a Cultural Bridge Fellowship, which saw her travel to Sudan for research, and participated in the Harvard Square to Oval Office program to train future political leaders. Prior to her role at Deutsche Bank, Joy was based in a local council economic development office in San Francisco where she was responsible for a multimillion dollar grant fund and launched a local Green Job Corps project. Joy is the co-chair of the HKS Alumni Club in London and has volunteered with the club for three years. She also cares deeply about the arts and is a young patron for the Prince’s Foundation for Children and the Arts, a charity that provides arts programmes in low income schools and for children who are in hospice care.


Jasvinder Devgon | RBS

Jasvinder DevgonJasvinder joined RBS’s Public Sector and Charities Team in July 2007 as Relationship Director for Major Charities and NHS Foundation Trust hospitals, having worked at a senior and strategic level in the Not-for-Profit sector for 10 years. Managing banking relationships with a focus on excellent customer service, Jasvinder is responsible for their transactional banking, treasury and debt solutions, assisting clients to deliver their business strategies by engaging in regular dialogue & partnership with them to understand their needs and identify solutions to enable clients to operate more efficiently and cost effectively. Jasvinder’s previous role was Chief Executive of Dudley Mind, having also worked in the field of Domestic Violence, Mental Health and Homelessness, during which time she gained extensive expertise in the way Charities operate. Jasvinder was also a consultant for major national research on Forced Marriages commissioned by the Home Office. Prior to this, Jasvinder worked with the RBS group accumulating over 10 years of core banking experience, including considerable experience of Corporate Banking.

Jasvinder is a trustee of Womankind Worldwide, an international women’s human rights charity working to help women transform their lives in Africa, Asia and Latin America. She is Co-Chair of RBS's Focused Women's Network, London and is also an active member of a number of key networks including City Mothers and Women in Banking and Finance.

Manjit Kaur Kang | Natwest

Manjit Kaur KangManjit is a loyal and longstanding employee of NatWest Bank now completed 24 years continuous service. Accredited Chartered Banker specialising in real estate finance and managing a portfolio of 150 business clients. Manjit remains a top performer year on year & offers outstanding customer service to her clients, out performs all her colleagues with lending objectives & still finds time to mentor & coach other members of staff. Manjit is seen as a role model by many of her colleagues at NatWest.

As a Women in Business specialist, Manjit supports, encourages & empowers women to set up their own businesses by making it easier for them to get access to finance, shares their ambitions & offers the expertise. Manjit has lead & ran high profile networking events for Women where guest speakers have included Lorely Burt MP for Women in Business & Pinky Lilani (UK’s 100 most influential woman).

As Diversity Ambassador for NatWest West Midlands, Manjit has made a real difference to the diverse communities of Birmingham by engaging, communicating & supporting these communities to gain access to finance. Her dedication & determination was recently rewarded as Winner of the prestigious external Award from Institute of Asian Business ‘Outstanding Business Woman of the Year’ 2014’ Manjit has been recognised for all her hardwork as winner & finalist of many other awards, including as Winner of RBS Focused Womens' Global Sapphire Award in 2015.

In her own time, Manjit volunteers for Unique Home for Girls, Punjab, India, which is a Home that looks after abandoned & unwanted girls in India - recently raised £30,000 for the charity through various cultural events. Also is a senior member of the Sikh Network who are a group of Sikh professionals actively engaging with politicians on matters that affect the Sikh community in the UK. Sikh Network also launched the Sikh Manifesto in readiness for General elections 2015.

Nicola Ruane | EY

Nicola firmly believes that the finance sector has a responsibility to create a more economically, environmentally and socially sustainable world. From 2007 whilst working on a trading floor, Nicola began to question the negative impact of complex financial products on the wider economy. Following a career break in 2010 to work on a sustainability project in Peru, she studied part time for a Masters in CSR focusing on corporate governance, ethics, sustainability and human rights, achieving first class honours. Since 2012 she has been pioneering the EMEA CSR programme of MUFG, a major Japanese bank, developing a regional community investment programme leading to the bank’s shortlisting for a prestigious Lord Mayor of London Dragon award. At a global level, she initiated a materiality analysis to identify the bank’s most important social and environmental issues in order deliver value to the business and stakeholders. Ready for a new challenge, she has recently joined EY’s EMEIA financial services office as Corporate Sustainability Operations Lead.

A change agent, Nicola is passionate about inspiring, educating and learning with and from others to move the dial in a collaborative way; through mentor and mentee relationships, as a co-founder of the women’s network at MUFG, as an active One Young World ambassador and with a blog on the Huffington Post. Consequently, she has been invited to speak in New York at the B Team forum, a collection of business and world leaders led by Richard Branson, who have come together to advance the wellbeing of people and the planet through business. Committed to be part of changing the sector for the better - Nicola advocates for more women in senior roles, more long-term and ethical decision making and a financial services sector that responds to the needs of our society.


Layla Mullins | HSBC

layla mullinsUsing my skills in organisation and Global Event Management gained from a 14 year career as a PA, I was promoted to a business analyst role in January 2014. In my current role, I have identified and networked together 1,200 people globally to standardise tools and methods used within their roles - and launched a solid community to promote working together as a team, career development and mobility across business areas. I keep in touch with the 1,200 employees with regular comms and monthly global networking events in APAC, NY, Dubai and the UK where ideas are shared and taken back to the central team with the aim to make improvements to the way we work at HSBC.

Alongside my ‘day job’, I volunteered as an Events Organiser for the HSBC Gender Diversity employee resource group called Balance at the mid-2013. In November 2014 I was elected as the UK Chair. I am passionate about gender diversity and have driven a committee of volunteers to increase UK membership by over 500 to 2,500. I have spent a lot of time networking with senior leaders to get Balance more recognised as a key part of the HR process, improving transparency of initiatives to benefit gender diversity. I am not afraid to challenge when I believe the business is not considering the impact of decisions and have driven events for the members which genuinely engage across the business, linking senior leaders to women with aspirations. During my tenure, Balance has launched a global committee to add some governance around the 25 (and growing) branches that we have worldwide. Specifically in the UK, I have appointed committees to run Balance North (incorporating 8 branches) and Balance Scotland (3 branches) to bring he organization closer together and open opportunities for all. Together, we deliver country-wide events and work towards impacting change on the organization.

Naomi Bowman ǀ HSBC

Naomi BowmanNaomi leads Governance & Operations within HSBC’s Monitor Liaison Office. She is responsible for maintaining an efficient and effective interface at all times between HSBC and the Monitor.

Prior to commencing this role in June 2014, Naomi was Head of Business Management & Strategy for the Global Standards Programme where she successfully designed and built the function responsible for financial management, vendor management and resourcing strategy.

Before joining HSBC in January 2013, Naomi was Senior Manager at EY specialising in operations and regulatory advisory and has achieved notable career success to date having worked on some of the most prominent banking administrations, integrations and mandatory regulatory changes during the past decade.

Naomi holds an ACA (ICAEW) and is currently studying for the ICA’s Postgraduate Diploma in Governance Risk and Compliance.

Outside the office, Naomi is Governor for Tonbridge Federation and delivers a number of speeches to students throughout the South East. An active diversity champion and public speaker, Naomi was key note speaker at the ICAEW’s prize giving ceremony 2015 and gave a TEDx talk at Imperial College in June 2015 on career acceleration.

Joanna Williams | Reed Smith LLP

Joanna WilliamsI was recently promoted to Of Counsel in the financial markets and regulatory group at Reed Smith, specialising in wholesale financial and commodities regulation. I am a recognised expert on European Market Infrastructure Regulation (EMIR) and the Regulation on Energy Market Integrity and Transparency (REMIT) implementation issues, for example, through my work for the European Federation of Energy Traders.

I started life as a qualified lawyer at Slaughter and May 14 years ago as a corporate finance associate. Just over 5 years on, I was seconded to Shell Treasury and joined Shell full time at the end of 2006. From there I moved to Shell Trading. During my 6 years at Shell, my practice covered derivatives, corporate finance, energy commodities trading and regulation. My love of financial markets regulation brought me to Reed Smith at the beginning of 2014.

Since then, I’ve spent my time helping a huge variety of clients to negotiate and respond to the unprecedented scale, pace and complexity of the regulatory changes that are affecting financial and commodities markets. I enjoy the constant challenge of applying my hands-on experience of in-house practice to identify what’s important to clients in a sea of regulatory reform and help them respond and plan accordingly. At a high level, this involves spotting trends and themes in regulation and the differing approaches of various regulators. At the same time, it involves being able to communicate complicated, dense and highly technical regulatory requirements in a way that’s easy to digest, practical and commercial.

I also really enjoy the opportunities being back in private practice has given me to work with and help to develop junior lawyers, as a trainee and intern supervisor, a mentor and through my work on the trainee and vacation scheme assessment panel.

Lucy Brooker - RBS - Rising Star 2015

Lucy has specialised in change management over her 13 year career at RBS, leading industry wide strategic programmes. With a passion for talent management, Lucy has recently turned her attention to driving Cultural Change, and is developing creative and inspiring training solutions for the Investment Banking business (Corporate and Institutional Banking) and generating an environment for continual professional development across all global regions (UK, US, EMEA and APAC).

Lucy is a passionate champion of Diversity and Inclusion in the workplace, and holds the voluntary role of Global Personal Development Manager for the RBS Focused Women’s Network (c.8k members globally), responsible for the attraction, development and retention of the female talent pipeline. She has been invited to speak as an expert on Employee Led Networks at Parliament, assisting in the creation of their gender network and has also supported other organisations including Santander, Equiniti and Societe General.

Lucy established the partnership with everywoman to launch the everywomanNetwork to the UK Focused Women member to provide online flexible development, and also designed and delivered a Personal Brand- Image and Impact lecture to Senior Investment Bankers.

Emma Couper | Bank of America Merrill Lynch

Emma Couper is the EMEA Risk Regional Business Manager, within the Chief Risk Officers, Chief Operating Officer’s team. She is based in London.

Emma joined Bank of America Merrill Lynch in May 2010 as part of the Business Management team supporting the Head of EMEA Technology Infrastructure. She moved into her current role in August 2011 and was promoted to Director in December 2014. Emma has won two Global Diversity and Inclusion Awards (2012 and 2013) and was nominated again in 2014.

Prior to joining the firm, Emma was a Commissioned Officer in the British Army, where she reached the rank of Major. Emma was a logistician by trade but during her last few years became a humanitarian specialist and led on the interface between the military and civilian communities. During her service she was posted in Germany, UK and Canada and deployed on operations to Bosnia, Kosovo, Afghanistan and Iraq.

"My time at Bank of America Merrill Lynch is where I have transitioned from a Military Officer to a civilian and I have been very privileged to undertake this in such a supportive environment - it has been truly intellectually demanding and ultimately rewarding. For me our people/team mates/ employees are all important so I am very grateful that I have been able to create, drive and empower a number of initiatives within EMEA Risk and the wider firm to support their personal & professional growth.

I am a great believer in the benefits of stepping out of your comfort zone both in and out of work, simply to remind myself that ‘to succeed, you have to try'.  As such I did my first ever triathlon at Windsor in early June over the Olympic distance. I was the only one of my friends who had not done a triathlon before and was utterly terrified - but I got round and actually rather enjoyed it.

I am now ready for the next challenge which will see me becoming business manager to the Chief Executive Officer at Aviva Investors in September 2015. I feel that my career in the financial sector is just beginning and as such am very grateful for this nomination."


Nyarai Kadungure | Barclays

Nyarai KadungureNyarai joined Barclays Bank at entry level (Analyst 1) as an undergraduate, through hard work and determination she has progressed through all four Analyst stages within the company and is currently on a year’s secondment for an Assistant Vice President position.

As part of her own self-development and learning, she embarked on a seven year personal development plan, to improve her industry awareness and employability. The learning objective funded by Barclays, started with a course on Credit Skills Development, an industry qualification to enhance her understanding of the lending relationships banks have with their customers. Once completed, she moved to phase two completion of The Professional Certificate in Banking certified by the Institute of Financial Services (ifs) and The Professional Diploma in Banking Practice Management. Now five years into that development plan, she is progressing to level six of the ifs university programme, a BSc (Hons) qualification in Banking Practice and Management. Aware that her journey is unique to herself, Nyarai is working with Barclays HR department, project managing the development of a Talent management scheme that supports colleagues in developing a targeted and individual development plan.

In her capacity as Co-Chair of Barclays Junior Advisory Committee, a sub-committee of the Women’s Initiative Network, Nyarai helps to engage junior employees at AVP and Analyst levels with the business. The aim is to focus on areas with maximum impact under the three areas of Mentorship, Training & Development and Retention. She facilitates programs which empowers juniors to not only meet critical business objectives but to also establish mentoring relationships for their own personal development. Nyarai helps to deliver great initiatives which create dialogue between senior leaders and junior members within the business and has looked to develop the initiative in the US and Asia.

As a member of the Women in Banking and Finance network, Nyarai is also progressing through the Toastmaster’s competent speaker and competent leader manuals to develop her skills for that senior role in Banking she is aspiring for.
